About Us

Leo Jansma - Valhalla Lodge - MHR Ltd. - Owner, Office Manager, Winter & Summer Guide, Custodian.

Leo saw his first mountains at 18 and fell in love with them. Moving from Ontario to BC, he started his seasonal life style of treeplanting in the spring and summer, and skiing in the winters. After a few years, the treeplanter turned into a planting contractor, organizing crews who have planted millions of trees all over BC.

In the winter the ski bum turned into a ski guide through the Association of Canadian Mountain Guides. Leo's guiding career has involved guiding ski tours, heli-skiing, cat skiing, and teaching avalanche and backcountry ski courses over the past 25 years. Many guests have enjoyed Leo's easy-going personality.

Relevant certifications include:
Canadian Avalanche Association Level 2
ACMG WINTER Ski Guide.
Occupational First Aid Level 3

Brian Cross - Valhalla Lodge - MHR Ltd. - Owner, Custodian, "Sinner on Snow".

Brian is as B.C. home grown as it gets. He started his skiing career at the early age of 2 and has not missed a season in the last 43 years. Brian has seen many remote corners of B.C working as a prospector. He started backcountry skiing in 1976. In 1985 he started working as custodian in the Kokanee Glacier Park, then in 1989 he moved on to the Valhalla Lodge.

Watch out for the "Bald Bomber" in ski magazines such as Powder, Couloir and others, as well as in the new feature film "Sinners on Snow". After spending his winters in the Valhalla herding white Crystals he returns to the snow free ranges and goes back to his simple life of being a sheep farmer and he also works as a fire warden for the BC Forest Service. Brian loves to ski Powder!

Relevant certifications include:
Canadian Avalanche Asc. Level 1
Occupational First aid Level 1

Mark Homis - Highland Helicopters Ltd. - Base Manager, Pilot - Nakusp.

Mark "Helicopter Pilot extrodinare". Mark has flown with us for the last 11 seasons and has been flying helicopters for the last 25 years. He has intimate knowledge of our local mountain weather, terrain and flight paths. He has over 11,300 flight hours.

Here at MHR we feel very fortunate to be flying with such a "steady pilot" as Mark and have thoroughly enjoyed him playing such an important role in our mountain life! Beyond getting us in and out of the lodge, he also has been instrumental in flying for us in conjunction with yearly maintanance and has flown most of the building material to the lodge location.
